Mexican in Kenneth Village. And where is Kenneth Village? (Hint: It’s in Glendale).
Frida Kahlo is staring at me.
No, not the Frida Kahlo. She’s been dead for a while. I’m talking about the picture of her hanging over that booth over there.
Gotta say, the art, the decor in this place is Mexican, and I mean authentic Mexican-Mexican.
So far, so good. Atmosphere doesn’t necessarily make a meal, but can help it along. It tells me that Mi Corazon wants me to have a good meal.
You wouldn’t expect to find it where it was, Kenneth Village up towards the mountains in northwestern Glendale. Heck, I didn’t know there was a Kenneth Village until I pulled up into it. The best way to describe it, is as a charming little town within the Bedroom community that is Glendale.
A place to come up and hang? To follow the hordes of sightseers and shoppers? Ehhh, probably not. Kenneth Village is charming and small and all that, but one gets the feeling that it really is just for the local residents. C’mon. When one of the happening spots is the local dry cleaner, just how much excitement are you expecting?
Mi Corazon will do you fine.
It’s not the largest of spaces, and the menu doesn’t exactly venture into unknown territory when it comes to Mexican cuisine, but what they do, they do well. Very…well. Basically, it’s still Tacos and Burritos, but they’re really well made Tacos and Burritos. They even have Tortas, Agua Frescas, and the creamy Cheese and spice covered concoction known as Elote, better known locally as Mexican corn.
Hey is that a bar near the Kitchen area? Not sure, but it looks like some seating. Maybe I should have sat over there. Gotten dinner AND a show.
The staff is very friendly, and it’s a warm and comfortable space. You’ll feel welcome here. You’ll like the food here.
WHAT SHOULD I GET?: My meal was pretty tasty, especially leading off like I did with the Elote. For those of you who haven’t had it, it’s a grilled ear of corn covered (in this case) with a creamy Mexican cheese and some spices. You who are not into strong assertive flavors, beware. This ain’t for the delicate. But it was delicious and put my already good mood into the stratosphere.
After that, I go the De Carnitas Tacos. A bit of a letdown after the Elote, but only because the Elote was so strong and tasty. In balance, the Tacos were not bad. Not the best I’ve ever had, but worth a return order. On further reflection, if they ask if you want Rice and beans with your tacos, just go ahead and say YES.
Of course, the offer Chips and Salsa as a lead off to your meal. Very good. Very tasty, but nothing you haven’t had before.
What you probably haven’t had before, is an Agua Fresca. Now an Agua Fresca is a combination of fruits, cereals, flowers, or seeds blended with sugar and water to make light non-alcoholic beverages.
In this case, it was pretty simple. Sugar, water and Watermelon for a very light, very refreshing drink. It went perfectly with dinner.
IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP, PEOPLE: It’s out of the way, and not in a typical part of town for Mexican Food, still it’s pretty damn good. Don’t let the exterior fool look. It all looks very suburban and safe. Get inside, and you’ll start to feel it.
Oh, and it’s open for breakfast.
PARKING: Mi Corazon shares a parking lot with a couple of other businesses. It’s the open space one door down from the restaurant. It was free and not terribly crowded. I get the feeling a lot of Mi Corazon’s comes from neighborhood foot traffic.
